A poem for Éowyn, written by Merry
Out of darkness, out of shadow to battle they would ride,
To Mundburg and to Gondor where the Sea-kings now abide.
She was to be left behind, to wait 'till they returned
From the great city of men where foul flames had burned.
Denied for the last time, all her hopes were lost,
Yet still she would ride with the King's golden host.
She would decide her own fate, she alone would choose.
She had lost so much, yet even more she could still lose.
In disguise she rode that dawnless day,
She took me with her when I did not want to stay,
This she said to me: "Come, little one, together we will ride,
Two unknown heroes may stop the dark tide."
Of our riding others new naught,
Luckily, we did not get caught.
She helped me find my courage, then she smote the evil King,
Of her great deeds that day many now still sing.
This poem is my thanks to her, modest it may seem,
Well, I am not much of a wondrous poet, I deem.
Time has come to end my tale of Éowyn the brave,
Her king and uncle she desperately wanted to save,
Yet she could not bring back those who passed away,
She could not save them from the shadow's sway.
But she found new love soon thereafter,
And may her days ever be filled with laughter.
Of her riding all now knew,
and those that didn't, well, those were few.
