The man came from the North
Like autumn's dream
To quench the fire of fevered thrones
Bound these thousand winters
By meager hands, and miles
Miles, and more
Of so many dead, passed and gone.

The man came from behind walls
And among silver pines
And peaks jumping so high--
A giant man to match
With handfuls of light
His law
Silence and hurling stones.

The man came with gems in his eyes
Unpolished still, and soft
As sapphires stirred on a river's shore
Rising through trees and rocks and hopes
Like cathedrals, his brothers
Had the sea
And his dreams woven in their banners

The man came from the Grey
Drained as moonlight
Stubborn and sweating, the breath of hate
The bleeding-away of these corpses
Redeemed by nothing, but noble
With teeth
To speak to ailing trees

The man came as the Wind
To capture and love
With lantern-hands, the desperate
As they dreamed
Of mothers and scarred breasts
For exile's blossom
For the birds circling, unended

The man came, that distant man
Like a feather floating wet
On the pond's surface, known
By the fish but untouched
Unkissed, shaking off dust
For all so Young
Who might go the way they should
